Nematodes

Nematodes are everywhere, most are microscopic. They are amongst the most simple organisms. Worm-like, they all have a mouth and a complete digestive system. They can be free ranging, living off of algae, fungus or decaying material, or parasitic, depending upon a host organism during it's life-cycle.

Nematodes used as a slug and snail control are parasitic and predatory. The are attracted to the slug and being very small can enter the slugs skin. Once there the bacteria released during its digestive processes kill the slug. Given a supply of slugs the nematodes will reproduce and go in search of more host slugs.

The nematodes used for pest control are harmless to us and our pets so can be used in areas where it would be unsafe to use other methods.

Nematodes are available from garden centers, mail order or off of the Internet. Supplied in small packets they are added to water and poured on or near areas which the slugs are seen.
